Areas of Interest
Storage and processing of hierarchical data structures (XML, JSON). Bulk and real-time indexing of semi-structured data. Information retrieval in multi-lingual full-text corpora (index-based wildcard and similarity search). Compiler construction of database languages (mostly XQuery); static and just-in-time optimization of database-centric and general-purpose code patterns. Maintenance of the Open Source XML DBMS and query processor BaseX.
Christian studied Information Management in Stuttgart and Information Engineering at the University of Konstanz. In his master’s thesis, he focused on Usability and Human Computer Interaction in Prof. Reiterer’s group. In the period of his PhD, he designed and implemented storage patterns and query algorithms for hierarchical data structures. The result was BaseX, an XML database and XQuery processor, which has been the basis of numerous subsequent bachelor’s and master’s theses. Since 2010, after his PhD defense, Christian has been working as postdoctoral researcher.
